In 2002 Emanuel Rosen appeared at a BIGfrontier event to discuss his
new book, the Anatomy of Buzz. At that time there were only a handful
of books covering buzz marketing, and Rosen’s was deemed the most
thorough and authoritative. His efforts in identifying influencer hubs
and utilizing people to evangelize messages formed the core that would
become the word of mouth marketing initiative. Emanuel said it first,
however, paving the way for scores of other books and organizations
wrapped around the subject.
As more and more forms of
communications were entered into the marketplace, the ability for
transmission of messages began to resemble Moore’s Law. Where in the
past an influencer would find an article and email it, that message can
now be blogged about and fed through an RSS feed. Add social networks
with their groups, tweeting, the ability to instantly upload video on
the fly, and you have the ability to shape opinion within minutes. The
Buzz in Rosen’s marketing thesis has reached symphonic levels.
